You Are a Spiritual Being!

What am I?...

That is the most important question you could ever ask yourself!

And... learning what you really are could be the greatest discovery you will ever make!

Nearly all of us go through life believing we are physical bodies. That is what the ego wants us to believe, and our five senses -- seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching -- seem to confirm it.

In addition, we believe we are what we call ourselves and what we do. We say things like: “I am Roy. I am a writer. I am a military retiree.” Our experiences in life have convinced us that this is what we are. What we call ourselves and what we do have given us our sense of identity.

Our effort to maintain our physical bodies and to do what we do consumes most of our time. For example, our physical bodies need eight hours or so of sleep each night. That physical requirement for sleep amounts to a whopping third of our lives, or roughly 25 years. And our jobs -- or doing what we do -- takes up another third of our lives. After all, we need a salary to pay for our body’s needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing.

The belief that we are physical bodies leads us to the conviction that we are separate from each other. You could say: “I am here. You are over there. And the space between us separates us.” This belief in separation gives us a false sense of individuality.

Long ago we chose to believe in this dream of separation. We have been playing a game of make-believe ever since. And not only do we believe we are separate from everyone else -- we also believe we are separate from Spirit. A Course in Miracles tells us that this belief in separation from each other and from God is the cause of all human ills.

As we passed through the veil of forgetfulness when we incarnated, we lost our memory of what we really are. Now it is high time to awaken from the dream and remember that we are not physical bodies, nor are we separate from each other and from Spirit. It is time for each of us to ask ourselves: “What am I really?”

Think of your physical body as a vehicle. When you get in your car, you do not become your car. You are merely in it, and it takes you where you want to go. Your body is like that -- you get in it, and it takes you where you want to go here in the physical world. You are in a body, but you are not a body.

What then are you really?

You are a spiritual being. That’s what you really are. As a spiritual being, you are eternal, limitless, and invulnerable. You are an expression of God or, as many have said, a “child of God.” The French Jesuit priest and philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) said it most eloquently: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” A Course in Miracles states: “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”

Most people continue to believe that we can exist only in one time and one place at a time -- that is, in a physical body here and now. But in fact, you are living multiple lives in the past, present, and future simultaneously and in various places and various dimensions concurrently. It is possible to connect to your other “selves.” One of the better-known ways to do this is through past-life regression. You are an infinite, unlimited creator. You are creating everything you are experiencing in this life and your other lives.

Why would you want to know what your really are? Why would you want to awaken from this physical dream you thought was real? Because then and only then can you experience total, unlimited bliss, spontaneity, joy, and love during your stay here in the physical world. No more game playing. No more manipulation. No more belief in separation. No more illusions. You came into this physical world to learn -- while you are here -- how to overcome your false sense of limitation and how to become the glorious, creative spirit you really are.

Yes, you forgot what you really are. Now it’s time to awaken. It’s time to remember.
